Dear Diary is a wry and whimsical semi-autobiographical film told by Moretti in three parts. Beginning with a Vespa ride through the residential neighbourhoods of Rome, we learn of Moretti’s love of Flashdance (1983) and his disdain for both life in the suburbs, and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). Visiting Stromboli we get a taste of island life while catching up on American soap operas at the edge of a volcano, and finally, determine that his incessant itching was a symptom of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which was missed by the “deaf” doctors in the darkest and most sarcastic moments of this original and surprising film (Klaus Ming May 2016).
