Keeper of Promises is a satirical religious drama about Zé do Burro, a devout farmer who carries a cross seven leagues to the Saint Bárbara Church – believing that his faith had saved his previously ill donkey. Though reaching the church, the local priest denies him entrance suggesting that his promise was made to a pagan god. Attracting many of the local faithful, and eventually the press, Zé becomes a local celebrity. Feeling like the inspiration for Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979), O Pagador de Promessas is a commentary on the hypocrisy of the church and the consequences of ignorance (Klaus Ming May 2016).
