Mother India (1957)

India 172m, Colour
Director: Mehboob Khan; Cast: Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar

mother-indiaBharat Mata is the epic tale of a peasant woman whose life becomes ruined by a series of tragic events which begin at marriage when her mother-in law mortgages the family farm to pay for her extravagant wedding. In constant debt to the local money-lender, Radha lives in abject poverty after losing her husband, and is left to raise her two surviving sons. A colourful melodrama, with a seemingly never-ending supply of misfortune, song and dance, Mother India can be seen as a metaphor for this long-suffering but resilient post-colonial nation (Klaus Ming May 2016).
