S’en Fout la Mort (1990)

France 90m, Colour
Director: Claire Denis; Cast: Isaach De Bankolé, Alex Descas, Jean-Claude Brialy, Solveig Dommartin, Christopher Buchholz

no-fear-no-dieNo Fear, No Die is a slow-paced gritty drama about Jocelyn and Dah, two men who train birds for Pierre, the owner of an illegal cockfighting establishment. In love with Pierre’s wife, Jocelyn also shares a past with Pierre, who apparently had a relationship with Jocelyn’s mother before they emigrated to France. The exploration of masculinity is the film’s central theme, and the cockfighting serve both as a metaphor, and as an outlet for the male characters’ actions and emotions (Klaus Ming June 2016).
