Center Stage (1992)

China 154m, Colour, B&W
Director: Stanley Kwan; Cast: Maggie Cheung, Ruan Lingyu, Chen Yan Yan, Li Lili, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Carina Lau, Chin Han, Paul Chang

Center_Stage_1992Center Stage is an intriguing biographical dramatization about the life of Ruan Lingyu, who at the height of her career, committed suicide. Part documentary, this film also contains original footage of Ruan, interviews with her contemporaries, as well as commentaries by Cheung and company about their experiences as actors in Center Stage. As the “Chinese Garbo”, Ruan’s life seems to be mirrored by a number of her films, and tragically is cut short by her own hand when she is humiliated by the press who reports on her involvement with a married man (Klaus Ming August 2016).
