Happy Together (1997)

Hong Kong 96m, Colour
Director: Wong Kar-wai; Cast: Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung, Chang Chen

happy_togetherHappy Together is an exploration of love and loneliness through the experiences of Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing, a couple from Hong Kong who travel to Argentina to “start over” again. Their destructive relationship is patterned by a series of breakups and reconciliations which are often marked by abusive behavior. The film’s often distressing plot is heightened by Wong Kar-wai’s imagery and unorthodox cinematography that includes variable film speeds and stock. Likewise, his poignant musical selections increase the desperation of his characters and the dark mood of this film (Klaus Ming September 2016).

  1. Happy Together takes upon a theme of love being destructive in a manner only paralleled in 2046. Nice review

Good comparison, and I really need to watch 2046 again. Thanks for the post!
