L’Albero Degli Zoccoli (1978)

Italy 186m, Colour
Director: Ermanno Olim; Cast: Luigi Ornaghi, Francesca Moriggi, Omar Brignoli

tree_of_wooden_clogsThe Tree of Wooden Clogs is the simple story of a group of devout Catholic peasant families living and working in the rural countryside of Bergamo, Italy during the late 19th century. Almost ethnographic in its depiction, this is a year-in-the life of hard-working peasants who hand over most of their labours to their landowner.  A snail-paced, but beautifully shot production, Olim’s characters are played by non-actors whose natural performances are convincing, but with so little plot, are never truly engaging (Klaus Ming September 2016).
