A thriller, The Vanishing is a story about the disappearance of a young woman and her boyfriend’s search for her. Taunted by her kidnapper over the course of three years, Rex finally has the opportunity to find out what happened to Saskia, but to do so, he must make a deal with the sociopath who abducted her. Rather than walk away, report him to the police, or attempt to beat the information out of her kidnapper, he ridiculously acquiesces, only to suffer the same fate. As if to somehow justify the story, notions of fate and predestination are lazily employed, which further undermine any credibility that this film may have had (Klaus Ming September 2016).
