Vagabond (1985)

France 105m, Colour
Director: Agnès Varda; Cast: Sandrine Bonnaire, Macha Méril, Yolande Moreau

vagabondVagabond is the story of an selfish young woman who is found frozen dead in a ditch in the film’s opening sequence. The circumstances which led to her death are told in a series of unconnected documentary-styled flashbacks which portray her adrift in life without meaning. In presenting Mona as a victim, Varda suggests that the life of a free spirit may seem romantic, but that the reality is much different. If this film is intended as a political statement on the plight of the homeless, it seems to have missed the point, as it fails to generate much sympathy, or address the root causes of the problem, or offer any possible solutions (Klaus Ming September 2016).
