Neco Z Alenky (1988)

Czechoslovakia/Switzerland/UK/West Germany/Soviet Union 84m, Colour
Director: Jan Švankmajer; Cast: Kristýna Kohoutová

neco-z-alenkyLoosely based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Neco Z Alenky is a wonderfully macabre and highly creative film that blends live action with stop motion animation. Unfortunately, as a feature-length production it eventually becomes tiresome, particularly in light of its many repetitive scenes and the absence of a musical score. Likewise, while this visually striking film is full of imagery befitting Alice’s dreams, her subconscious imagination would be better served had more attention been paid to the film’s underdeveloped script (Klaus Ming October 2016).
