The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985)

Taiwan 138m, Colour
Director: Hou Hsiao-Hsien; Cast: You An-shun, Tien Feng, Xin Shufen

the-time-to-live-and-the-time-to-dieThe Time to Live and the Time to Die is an autobiographical coming-of-age story based on Hou’s experiences during his childhood as a refugee in Taiwan after his family escaped the Communist takeover of China. The film documents his rebellion against the traditional Chinese values of his family and his adoption of a foreign culture. A slow and mostly nostalgic film, we are witness to the family’s suffering and losses in this quiet and contemplative story of a young man who takes his parents for granted, until it is too late (Klaus Ming October 2016).
