My Left Foot (1989)

Ireland/UK 103m, Colour
Director: Jim Sheridan; Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh O’Conor, Ray McAnally, Brenda Fricker, Cyril Cusack, Fiona Shaw, Adrian Dunbar, Ruth McCabe, Alison Whelan

my-left_footMy Left Foot is the adaptation of Christy Brown’s 1954 inspirational autobiography of the same name. Born with cerebral palsy into a poor Irish family with 22 siblings, a good portion of the film deals with Christy’s ability to verbally communicate and his budding career as a self-taught painter-turned writer. Though Daniel Day-Lewis’s remarkable performance as Christy earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor, Hugh O’Conor’s performance as the young Christy is also highly accomplished (Klaus Ming October 2016).

This movie is all about Day-Lewis’s performance, but Brenda Fricker does a great deal with the role she’s given. It’s a hell of a fine movie all the way through, and I don’t think the five stars is out of line.

This was also one of my “gap” movies. I’d seen excerpts of Day-Lewis’s performance many times, but had never seen the movie until now. – Amazing stuff!
