Tampopo (1986)

Japan 115m, Colour
Director: Juzo Itami; Cast: Tsutomu Yamazaki, Nobuko Miyamoto, Koji Yakusho, Ken Watanabe, Rikiya Yasuoka

tampopo-1986Tampopo is a peculiar comedy about a recently widowed woman who seeks the help of a truck driver to improve her noodle shop. A culinary love-letter, Tampopo also contains a number of food-related vignettes that speak to Japanese culture, but which are internationally understandable. Apart from the exaggerated and incessant slurping sounds of the noodle-loving characters, this is an enjoyable farce that will whet your appetite (Klaus Ming October 2016).
