The Horse Thief (1986)

China 88m, Colour
Director: Tian Zhuangzhuang; Cast: Daiba, Jiji Dan, Drashi, Gaoba, Jamco Jayang, Rigzin Tseshang

the_horse_thiefThe Horse Thief is a slow-moving documentary-like film that illustrates the interconnections of Tibetan beliefs, religion, ritual and culture through the story of Norbu, a man who is banished from his village for being accused of theft. Though ostracized by his clan, and forced to live on their own, Norbu and his family maintain their faith despite the hardships as outcasts. Perhaps intended as an analogy for the perseverance of the Tibetan way of life within China, Norbu will do everything he can to provide for his family, even if it means becoming a thief (Klaus Ming October 2016).
