Tristana (1970)

Spain/France/Italy 100m, Colour
Director: Luis Buñuel; Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Fernando Rey, Franco Nero, Lola Gaos

tristanaTristana is an orphaned girl who finds herself under the care of Don Lope Garrido, an old family friend who becomes her adoptive father. Strictly controlling every facet of her life, and using his influence over her, Tristana finds herself playing the role of Don Lope’s wife. Though escaping his control and running off with a young artist, Tristana eventually returns to manipulate Don Lope’s remaining years. The film’s conclusion, which sees Tristana getting revenge comes at great cost, which may well be the point to this gloomy story (Klaus Ming October 2016).
