Blancanieves (2012)

Spain/France 105m, B&W, Silent
Director: Pablo Berger; Cast: Macarena García, Maribel Verdú, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ángela Molina, Inma Cuesta, Sofía Oria, Josep Maria Pou

blancanievesBlancanieves is a dramatic fantasy based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, though in this Spanish adaptation, the little people are a troupe of traveling vaudeville entertainers who specialize in bullfighting. Set in Seville, Spain during the early 1920s, this modern take on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy-tale followed another critically acclaimed contemporary silent film, The Artist (2011). Unfortunately, Blancanieves received little attention outside of the film festival circuit, despite being every bit as good as its American counterpart. Free of self-referential gimmicks, Berger’s silent film is a surprisingly powerful drama, with beautiful cinematography and engaging characters (Klaus Ming November 2016).
