The Last King of Scotland (2006)

UK/US 123m, Colour
Director: Kevin Macdonald; Cast: Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy, Kerry Washington, Simon McBurney, Gillian Anderson

the-last-king-of-scotlandThe Last King of Scotland is the fictional story of a young Scottish physician named Nicholas Garrigan who travels to Uganda to work in a rural missionary hospital. After a chance meeting with the new Ugandan leader Idi Amin, Garrigan reluctantly becomes Amin’s confidant and one of his chief advisers. Though the story is chiefly about the young doctor’s predicament, it is Whitaker’s outstanding performance as the Ugandan dictator which is most notable in this engaging drama (Klaus Ming November 2016).

Forest Whitaker dominates this film like no actor I’ve seen in a long time. As a performance piece, The Last King of Scotland is definitely Whitaker’s show, and boy does he deliver!

I was also surprised at how good / unrecognizable Gillian Anderson was.
