Hell or High Water (2016)

US 102m, Colour
Director: David Mackenzie; Cast: Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gil Birmingham, Marin Ireland

hell-or-high-waterA beautifully filmed and original contemporary western, Hell or High Water is the violent story of two brothers who rob branches of a local Texas bank to raise money to settle the debt of their deceased mother’s reverse mortgage. As a powerful commentary on class struggle the film’s anti heroes practice a form of frontier justice which is aimed at a corrupt financial system. Unfortunately, the Texas Rangers who are simply attempting to uphold justice, get caught in the crossfire (Klaus Ming January 2017).

I just watched this tonight and liked it quite a bit. It feels like it’s touching on some of the same ideas, or at least the same people as something like No Country for Old Men, but also feels entirely new. It’s a smart screenplay, and I always appreciate that.

Agreed, No Country for Old men has come up in conversations with a few other film friends. Definitely a similar vibe.

This was the first of the Oscar nominees that I’ve watched, and is probably the best of the lot.
