A nostalgic musical comedy, La La Land is a melancholy story that follows the dreams of two aspiring artists and their choice of pursuing their careers over their relationship. The film’s dream sequence, which serves as an epilogue of what their lives could have been is clever, but a largely depressing conclusion, despite the brief smiles that are exchanged by the principal characters. While the musical performances and dancing are fun, there is little that is extraordinary about this film, which begs the question why there is such overwhelming critical acclaim?
