The Merchant of Four Seasons (1971)

West Germany 88m, Colour
Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder; Cast: Hans Hirschmüller, Irm Hermann, Hanna Schygulla, Klaus Löwitsch, Karl Scheydt, Andrea Schober, Kurt Raab, Ingrid Caven, Gusti Kreissl

The Merchant of Four Seasons is the story of a jealous fruit and vegetable vendor named Hans who has failed to live up to family and societal expectations, though clearly he has attempted to compensate for his shortcomings by marrying a woman of superior stature. This is a dark comedic drama about a vulgar and mean-spirited man whose ego is both shaped and crushed by societal expectations, and which over values economic success and taller men (Klaus Ming March 2017).
