Opération Lune (2002)

France 52m, Colour
Director: William Karel; Cast: Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Lois Aldrin, Henry Kissinger, Donald Rumsfeld, Vernon Walters, Alexander Haig, Lawrence Eagleburger

Opération Lune is a clever re-framing of the moon-land conspiracy-theory hoax as a television mockumentary that demonstrates the power of appeals to authority and the manipulation of media. In disguising the truth through careful editing, Karel creates a more believable premise that Kubrick’s “fake” moon footage was employed by Nixon not because Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin didn’t land on the moon, but rather, because the footage that they shot was unusable. Unfortunately the subtlety of this film seems lost on those who continue to seek out the “truth” in the shady areas of the internet (Klaus Ming March 2017).
