Shadows (1922)

US 70m, B&W, Silent
Director: Tom Forman; Cast: Lon Chaney, Marguerite De La Motte, Harrison Ford, John St. Polis. Shadows

Set in a small fishing village, Shadows is a melodramatic story of Yen Sin, a shipwrecked Chinese immigrant who becomes instrumental in bringing to light a blackmail scheme that threatens the town’s young minister and his family. Billed as the “man of a thousand faces”, Chaney’s portrayal of an Asian character is part of his famed legacy. While his performance is now culturally inappropriate, Shadows creates a compassion for his character, which did serve to expose racial prejudice and promote tolerance and understanding (Klaus Ming March 2017).
