Outside the Law (1920)

US 75m, B&W, Silent
Director: Tod Browning; Cast: Priscilla Dean, Wheeler Oakman, Lon Chaney, Ralph Lewis, E. Alyn Warren

Outside the Law is an unusual crime film turned love story about a gang leader and his daughter Molly (Dean) who are counselled by a Chinese philosopher to give up their lives of crime. Their plans to go straight are complicated by Black Mike (Chaney), a fellow criminal who devises a scheme to double cross Molly and frame her father for murder. Dean’s portrayal of Molly is one of silent cinemas most memorable performances for a female lead, overshadowing everyone, including Chaney (Klaus Ming March 2017).
