He Who Gets Slapped (1924)

US 71m, B&W, Silent
Director: Victor Sjöström; Cast: Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, John Gilbert, Tully Marshall, Marc McDermott

He Who Gets Slapped is a strangely compelling drama about a former scientist who becomes a clown after his wealthy patron steals his work and his wife. Resigned to a life in the circus, “He” relives his humiliation through nightly reenactments of his disgrace in front of the Academy of Sciences. Though “He” gets the last laugh – so to speak, MGM’s new mascot gets involved in more than opening title sequence of this dark cruel film (Klaus Ming March 2017).

This is my favorite Lon Chaney movie. Except maybe for The Unknown. Or West of Zanzibar. Everybody who loves silent films in general and Lon Chaney in particular should see it.

I rather liked this one. Chaney had real talent for this sort of character who was in some ways terrible and in other ways compelling and sympathetic.

As I’m finding out! I had not given much attention to Chaney up until recently.

    One of my favorites!

It’s a good one, though I think my favourite is still The Unknown.
