Director: Antoine Fuqua; Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Peter Sarsgaard
A pretty looking and dark comedic remake of the 1960 film of the same name, The Magnificent Seven is entertaining up until the overdone action-packed finale in which the bad guys seem to re-spawn as in a video game, providing a near endless supply of targets. The multicultural cast seems a bit contrived as do the skill-sets of the film’s seven anti-heros. While modern audiences are likely to prefer Fuqua’s version over Sturges’ 1960 classic, neither comes close to the source material in Kurosawa’s truly magnificent Seven Samurai (Klaus Ming June 2017).
