Icarus (2017)

US 121m, Colour
Director: Bryan Fogel; Cast: Bryan Fogel, Grigory Rodchenkov

Icarus is a fascinating documentary intended as an exploration of the power of doping in sport. The story begins with the filmmaker’s personal experimentation with performance enhancing drugs as a means to improve his own result in a gruelling amateur cycling event. To accomplish this, he enlists the aid of Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory who becomes the center of an international scandal because of Russia’s alleged government sponsored doping program. In becoming friends, Fogel attempts to help Rodchenkov tell his story under mounting political pressure and possible threats to their safety (Klaus Ming February 2018).
