Director: Paul Thomas Anderson; Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville
Set in the 1950s, Phantom Thread is a strange and suspenseful love story of an obsessive fashion designer, Reynolds Woodcock and a young waitress, Alma Elson, who becomes his muse, assistant, lover and wife. A complete mismatch, Alma goes to extreme lengths to ensure that Reynolds will rely upon her. A surprisingly dark and beautifully made period film, Alma’s sociopathic behaviour is almost as disturbing as Reynolds’ acceptance of her deadly actions (Klaus Ming March 2018).
