Suburbicon (2017)

US 105m, Colour
Director: George Clooney; Cast: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Oscar Isaac

A mess of a neo-noir murder mystery with unlikable characters, Suburbicon is a black comedy with very little humor and even fewer redeeming qualities. Set in the late 1950s, a scheming husband and his sister-in-law hatch a murderous scheme to fund their plans for a tropical escape. Meanwhile, their new neighbours -a black family, are accused of threatening the social well-being and the very safety of the neighbourhood. As a satirical commentary on racial issues of the 1950s, Suburbicon lacks any fresh insight or makes any meaningful contribution. As a murder mystery, it is as cold-hearted as it is predictable (Klaus Ming March 2018).
