While taking less than half the time to finish as Wells’ The Other Side of the Wind (2018), Gilliam’s Don Quixote also finally found its way to completion in 2018. As the subject of the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha, the original unfinished film was shelved after a series of unfortunate events that plagued the production. A much-anticipated film, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is about a filmmaker’s ill-fated attempt to make Don Quixote, and the resulting madness inflicted upon those involved. While this much might be autobiographical, this is a fantasy that moves in a number of directions simultaneously and with all of the hallmark features of Gilliam’s vivid and meandering imagination (Klaus Ming January 2019).
