At Eternity’s Gate (2018)

US/ UK/ France 110m, Colour
Director: Julian Schnabel; Cast: Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Mads Mikkelsen, Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Oscar Isaac

Unlike most previous biographical depictions of Vincent van Gogh, At Eternity’s Gate is a drama that concerns itself with the painter’s own perspective during the final years of his life. As such, Schnabel often employs first person perspectives which put the viewer inside Vincent’s deeply troubled mind. The result is a fascinating spiral into the beautiful madness of the artist’s imagination and his observations and inspirations of the world which so influenced his painting. A deeply thoughtful film, At Eternity’s Gate is an unforgettable and immersive viewing experience (Klaus Ming January 2019).
