Mortal Engines (2018)

New Zealand / US 128m, Colour
Director: Christian Rivers; Cast: Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae Kim, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, Stephen Lang

Mortal Engines is dystopian Road Warrior-inspired post-apocalyptic film set in the distant future where mechanized cities roam the earth in search of resources. Despite its box office failure, this is a surprisingly entertaining film with loads of visually interesting steam punk inspired production designs. The film’s most interesting story line is that of the relationship between a cyborg known as a “Stalker” and Hester Shaw, a young woman whose mother was killed for a component of ancient technology. Unfortunately their relationship is underdeveloped, as are a number of other subplots (Klaus Ming March 2019).
