Prof. Welton’s Boxing Cats (1894)

US <1m, B&W
Directors: William Kennedy Dickson, William Heise; Cast: Henry Welton

Adorned with tiny boxing gloves and held in harnesses by their owner, handler and “corner man”, Professor Welton’s boxing cats is likely the first comedic cat “video” ever produced. Providing a brief glimpse into the future of one of the internet’s most popular themes, this early short film from the Edison studio would have enraged animal rights activist had there been any at that time (Klaus Ming April 2019).

First cat video ever! That is huge. Pinky the cat is another great classic from the early days of… YouTube.
