Dragged Across Concrete (2018)

US 159m, Colour
Director: S. Craig Zahler; Cast: Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, Tory Kittles, Michael Jai White, Jennifer Carpenter, Laurie Holden, Fred Melamed, Udo Kier, Thomas Kretschmann, Don Johnson.

Dragged Across Concrete is S. Craig Zahler’s little known third feature film which deserves a larger audience than it has found. A dark and violent police-themed thriller, this is not your typical buddy cop / bank heist gone wrong story. Gibson’s portrayal of Brett Ridgeman, the film’s unapologetic anti-hero, has much in common with some of the 1970s most popular vigilante “law enforcement” characters such as Paul Kersey and Harry Callahan. Arguably, the film’s limited theatrical release may have something to do with the fact that Zahler lets the characters speak for themselves, and in so doing, alienates audience members who might have wished him to condemn their actions (Klaus Ming July 2019).
