A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

US 109m, Colour
Director: Marielle Heller; Cast: Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a highly original and heartwarming family drama / biopic inspired by a 1998 Esquire magazine cover article about the children’s television personality Fred Rogers. Following an assignment to write a 400 word article for his magazine, journalist Lloyd Vogel’s life takes an unexpected turn after a series of meetings with Mr. Rogers. A thoughtful and deeply insightful man of few words, Fred Rogers is delightfully portrayed by Hanks in one of my favourite movies of the year. A shame that this film was overlooked for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards (Klaus Ming January 2020).
