A re-booted origin story, Godzilla Minus One is a surprisingly heartfelt family drama in which the principal character, a failed kamikaze pilot, seeks to regain his honor by killing Godzilla. Easily the best Godzilla movie to-date, Minus One draws much inspiration from, and pays homage to Ishiro Honda’s 1954 Gojira. Scene-for-scene reenactments of iconic monster destruction from Gojira is one of a number of visual treats for fans of the original. As a CGI creation, Yamazaki aptly captures the heavy lumbering essence of the original Godzilla as well as the fear and dread that is so well conjured up by the sound effects and music, which are faithfully updated in this version.
