Army of the Dead (2021)

US 148m, Colour
Director: Zack Snyder; Cast: Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, Garret Dillahunt

Army of the Dead is a comedic ensemble-style zombie genre film about a group of mercenaries who plan and execute a casino heist within the quarantined borders of Las Vegas. If zombies were not enough of a headache, the crew is faced with nuclear annihilation as the United States government has imminent plans to nuke the city and resolve the zombie infestation once and for all. While there are plenty of over-the-top comedic moments of gore in this action film, the fun is too often spoiled by forced family drama and cliched character traits (Klaus Ming December 2021).

Zack Snyder seems like a really good guy. What he did with cobbling Tig Notaro into this, for instance, indicates a guy with a decent social conscience at the very least.

But I think we need to start realizing that he’s just not that good of a director or storyteller.

I found this effort to be clumsy on a number of fronts (including the social elements) – which probably relates to your second comment about him not being the greatest director/story teller :). Still good fun if you have yet to tire of the zombie genre.
