UK 58m, B&W/Colour
Director: Kevin Brownlow & Michael Kloft; Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Sydney Chaplin, Walter Bernstein
The Tramp and the Dictator is an insightful documentary film about the unlikely parallels between the lives of Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler, and the historical circumstances that drew them together. Inter-cutting behind-the-scenes colour footage shot by Chaplin’s brother Sydney during the extensive production of The Great Dictator (1940), Brownlow and Kloft explore the making of Chaplin’s daring production, and his personal plea against fascism and antisemitism (Klaus Ming April 2014).
