Z (1969)

Algeria/France 127m, Colour
Director: Costa-Gavras; Cast: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Yves Montand, Irene Papas, Jacques Perrin

z_1969In the film’s opening credits, we read: “Any similarity to actual persons or events is deliberate”, and as such, it would appear that the makers of Z have something important to say. Though fictionalized, this political thriller is based on the 1963 assassination of Greek politician and former Olympian, Grigoris Lambrakis by right-wing militants and the attempted cover-up by police and state authorities. A hugely influential film in its day, Z remains a frustrating cautionary tale about ideology and the abuses of power (Klaus Ming September 2016).

Frustrating? I watched this years ago (9?) and screened it at my university (we had a historical film group). I have fond memories.

Historical as in films about history…

An amazing film, but “frustrating” regarding the further injustices that were carried out before the courts.
