Director J.J. Abrams revitalized the Federation franchise by cleverly portraying the characters of the original television series in an alternate reality which is arguably more entertaining than anything previously offered-up in the Star Trek universe. The personalities of the original crew are not only faithfully maintained, but are enhanced with 40 years of hindsight. Apart from the updated production values and outstanding performances of the cast, the strength of this film is the twist in the main story line, which places the Enterprise and her crew in a parallel dimension which free future films to go boldly where no previous production has gone before (Klaus Ming May 2009).
