Great Expectations (1946)

UK 113m, B&W
Director: David Lean; Cast: John Mills, Anthony Wager, Jean Simmons, Valerie Hobson, Alec Guinness, Martita Hunt, Finlay Currie

great_expectationsGreat Expectations is an exquisitely photographed drama about a good-natured orphan boy who is taken advantage of by most everyone he meets. Manipulated by a frighteningly eccentric woman who takes great enjoyment in seeing him berated by a cruel young girl under her supervision, Pip is aided by an anonymous benefactor with “Great Expectations” to become a gentleman. Full of rich characters and first-rate performances, this is a remarkably successfully distillation of Dickens’ classic novel of the same name (Klaus Ming May 2014),

It is a nice enough movie, but I am still wondering what it is really about. Then again, I never read the book.
Did you expect any less than good from David Lean?

I read the book in high school – so many years ago. Luckily i didn’t remember that much of the story – so i was able to enjoy the suspense of the film. And no surprise that this was going to be a good one!
