Marlon Brando (1924 –2004)

Born: Marlon Brando, Jr.
April 3, 1924

Marlon_BrandoConsidered by many as one of the greatest actors of all time, Marlon Brando won the Oscar for Best Actor two of the five times he was nominated. Known for his rugged good looks and bad boy image in the 1950s with his iconic role as Johnny in The Wild One (1953), Brando reinvented his image as Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972) – a role for which he is perhaps best remembered. In total, Brando starred in five films which are on the 1001 list, including: A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954), Guys and Dolls (1955), The Godfather (1972,) Last Tango in Paris (1972), and Apocalypse Now (1979) (Klaus Ming January 2012).

Guys and Dolls? Really? This is like one of those “which of these things is not like the others” lists.

Well, you said there were five and then you listed six, so maybe that’s why. 🙂

Yeah really! I couldn’t believe how much I did not enjoy that movie.

My father had a particular way of watching that movie. When it was on TV he’d sit and watch the first few minutes, through the “Fugue for Tinhorns” (which he loved). “I’ve got the horse right here, his name is Paul Revere…” Then he’d turn it off, or change channels. That was the only part he ever watched. Later I found out why.
